OMPT-E guide (2026): syllabus, difficulty, universities, pass marks and price

OMPT-E is the OMPT module with a statistics track: 40 questions in 120 minutes over 161 topics in 12 chapters, seven on algebra and functions and five on statistics and probability. Psychology, social science and data programmes ask for it, with pass marks from 55% to 70%. Each attempt costs €240 and the test provider suggests about 120 hours of preparation.

OMPT-E exam format

Three minutes per question is slower than OMPT-A (2.3) and much faster than OMPT-D (8.6). The pace fits single-step algebra and short probability calculations, so a question that runs past six minutes is a sign to enter your best answer and move on. A useful checkpoint: at the 60-minute mark you should be past question 20. There is no partial credit: a right method with a wrong final answer scores nothing on that question.

OMPT-E syllabus: the 12 chapters

The official OMPT-E syllabus lists these chapters in this order. Chapters 8 to 12 hold 41 of the 161 topics, about a quarter of the syllabus, and they are the part most applicants have never studied in a structured way.

1. Numbers: fractions, exponents and roots, worked by hand and simplified to exact form.
2. Algebra: expanding, factorising and simplifying expressions, including algebraic fractions.
3. Linear formulas and equations: solving linear equations, rearranging formulas and reading linear relationships.
4. Systems of linear equations: solving two or more equations together.
5. Quadratic equations: solving by factorising, completing the square or the quadratic formula.
6. Functions: notation, domain and range, graphs.
7. Exponential and logarithmic functions: growth and decay, log rules and exponential equations.
8. Descriptive statistics: summarising data with measures of centre and spread.
9. Probability: events, conditional probability and multiplying probabilities across draws.
10. Combinatorics: counting arrangements and selections, permutations and combinations.
11. Random variables: discrete random variables, expected value and variance.
12. Common probability distributions: named distributions such as the binomial, and probabilities computed from them.

Which universities require OMPT-E

Our list has eight programmes that accept OMPT-E, so all of them are shown here. Minimum scores and attempt rules come from each programme's admission page.

Psychology and social science programmes in the Netherlands, plus a group of Lithuanian programmes, use OMPT-E. Two programmes accept another module in its place (OMPT-C at Radboud Psychology, OMPT-D at Radboud Artificial Intelligence), so check which one is shorter for you before booking. The universities list links to the source page for each row, and OMPT passing scores collects the minimums for every module.

OMPT-E pass marks

OMPT-E minimums run from 55% to 70%. Radboud University (Psychology and Artificial Intelligence), Mykolas Romeris University and the Vilnius bachelor's programme sit at 55%. VU Amsterdam asks 60% for Psychology and Law in Society. Amsterdam University College and the Vilnius master's programmes ask 70%, the highest in the list.

Do not aim for the minimum. Mock scores move 5 to 10 points between sittings, and the real exam adds a proctor, an ID check and a room scan. Aim for 10 to 15 points above your programme's threshold on your last mock: a 60% minimum means a 70 to 75% mock, a 70% minimum means 80 to 85%. If the programme page does not state a minimum, plan for 75%.

How hard is OMPT-E

Against its neighbouring modules:

OMPT-E has 15 fewer topics than OMPT-A and more time per question, yet the test provider suggests 40 more hours of preparation. The reason is the five statistics chapters. Students who prepare from OMPT-A material walk in with a quarter of the syllabus unseen. The difficulty is coverage, not pace.

The only official score figure the test provider publishes applies across modules: students who worked through its learning materials scored 76% on average on their first attempt, students who did not scored 40%. Most OMPT-E minimums sit between 55% and 70%, so the prepared average passes everywhere and the unprepared average passes nowhere. The module comparison in full is in how hard is the OMPT.

Example OMPT-E question with worked solution

This question is one of Examify's own practice items from the OMPT-E syllabus page, not a past paper. It tests chapter 9, probability without replacement.

Question: a bag holds 5 red and 3 blue marbles. You draw two without replacement. What is the probability that both are red?

1. On the first draw 5 of the 8 marbles are red, so P = 5/8.
2. After one red is removed, 4 of the remaining 7 are red, so P = 4/7.
3. Multiply the two: (5/8)·(4/7) = 20/56.

Answer: 5/14 ≈ 0.357. Enter the simplified fraction 5/14 unless the question asks for a decimal.

How to prepare for OMPT-E

The official 120 hours assumes you relearn most of the syllabus. This plan follows that figure.

1. Take a timed diagnostic first. Start with the free OMPT practice test, two of the harder OMPT-E questions in the real answer box, then a full 40-question, 120-minute mock. Score per chapter and rank the 12 chapters from weakest to strongest.
2. Chapters 1 to 5, about 30 hours. Numbers, algebra, linear and quadratic equations, systems. Drill without a calculator and simplify every answer to its exact form.
3. Chapters 6 and 7, about 25 hours. Functions and exponential and logarithmic functions, working from the OMPT-E syllabus topic by topic.
4. Chapters 8 to 12, about 45 hours. Descriptive statistics, probability, combinatorics, random variables and distributions. Give this block its own weeks; it is 41 topics and most applicants start it from zero.

OMPT-E cost

An OMPT-E attempt costs €240, the same as OMPT-A, B, C and G; only OMPT-D and OMPT-F cost €270. Every attempt is bought separately, so a retake is another €240 and three attempts are €720. A slot has to be booked at least 72 hours ahead; short-notice booking exists at an extra fee. Results arrive within 8 business days. Most programmes accept up to three attempts, Mykolas Romeris caps it at two per year, so read the programme page before treating the first booking as a practice run.
