What Happens If Your Internet Disconnects During the OMPT?

It's the nightmare scenario every online test-taker imagines: two hours into a three-hour, €270 exam, the Wi-Fi drops. The OMPT actually has a defined playbook for this — and knowing it in advance turns a panic into a procedure.

What actually happens on a disconnect

All test questions load at the start of your session. If your connection drops mid-test, the secure browser blurs the screen, but the exam itself isn't gone: you're expected to reconnect, and reconnection time (typically a few minutes) is generally not deducted from your test time. Keep calm, note the clock time of the drop, and use the reconnect option rather than closing anything. Your answers sync when the connection restores — the critical thing is restoring it before the timer runs out.

The refund reality

Here's the part students most need to hear before test day: refunds are not given for connectivity problems on your side. Only failures clearly attributable to the test platform or the proctoring service qualify. If something does go wrong, record exactly what happened and how much time you lost, and file it with support immediately — but don't count on a refund for a home network failure.

The setup checklist that prevents most incidents

• Use a wired ethernet connection if at all possible — Wi-Fi is discouraged, and mobile hotspots are prohibited outright.
• Close every other program; the secure browser requires full-screen and secondary monitors must be unplugged.
• Memorize your login credentials — you can't check your phone or a password manager mid-exam.
• Test your equipment days early with the official system check, not the morning of.
• Have a household agreement: nobody streams, games, or restarts the router during your slot.

Reduce the stakes of any single session

Technical anxiety is really stakes anxiety: everything riding on one fragile session. You can't control the network 100%, but you can control whether one attempt carries your whole application — test early enough in your admission window that a disaster still leaves time to rebook, and walk in already sure of your math so a lost five minutes doesn't sink you.
