OMPT vs CCVX vs VWO Math B: Which Math Requirement Route Should You Take?

"I have to choose between VWO Mathematics B at Boswell-Bèta, CCVX, and OMPT-D. What should I do?" This exact dilemma fills admission-season forum threads, because many Dutch programmes accept more than one route to prove your mathematics level — and the routes differ enormously in cost, format, speed, and difficulty.

The three main routes

  • The OMPT: an online, live-proctored placement test you take from home, with results in about eight business days (four with fast grading). Cost per attempt is €240–270, and most programmes allow up to three attempts. It tests a defined syllabus per variant and can be scheduled year-round with 72 hours' notice.
  • CCVX (Centrale Commissies Voortentamen): traditional written university entrance exams in the Netherlands, held on a handful of fixed dates per year, usually sat in person. The fee per sitting is significantly lower than an OMPT attempt, but the fixed calendar means a failed exam can cost you months, not days.
  • VWO Math B via a preparatory institute (such as Boswell-Bèta): a taught course ending in a certificate at Dutch pre-university level. The most thorough option — and the slowest and most expensive overall, typically spanning months of classes.

Some universities also accept international qualifications outright: KU Leuven, for example, lists AP Calculus AB at a sufficient score as an alternative to an OMPT-D result. If you already hold AP, IB HL, or A-level mathematics, check whether you need a placement test at all before paying for one.

How to choose

  1. Check what your programme actually accepts — this decision is made for you more often than students expect, and some programmes accept only one route.
  2. If you're on a deadline measured in weeks, the OMPT's on-demand scheduling and fast results are hard to beat; CCVX's fixed dates may simply not fit.
  3. If budget dominates and the next CCVX date works, the lower exam fee is attractive — but price in the risk of waiting months for a retry.
  4. If your math foundation is genuinely thin, a taught VWO-B course builds it properly; a placement test only measures what's already there.
  5. If you're abroad, the OMPT is the only route that doesn't involve travelling to the Netherlands.

If the OMPT is your route

For most international applicants on a normal admission timeline, it is — which makes preparation quality the deciding factor. Start from the syllabus page for your variant — for example OMPT-A or OMPT-D —, then take a timed OMPT-style practice exam to see whether you'd clear your programme's pass mark today.
