OMPT-D guide (2026): syllabus, difficulty, universities, pass marks and price

OMPT-D is the broadest OMPT module: 21 questions in 180 minutes, drawn from 242 topics in 11 chapters that run from numbers and algebra to differentiation, trigonometry, geometry and integration. Econometrics, computer science, data science and engineering programmes ask for it. An attempt costs €270 and the test provider suggests about 120 hours of preparation.

Examify is independent, not affiliated with the OMPT, SOWISO or any university. This guide uses the provider's published figures and the admission pages of the programmes that require OMPT-D.

OMPT-D exam format

ItemOMPT-D
Questions21
Time limit180 minutes
Minutes per questionabout 8.6
Topics242 in 11 chapters
Suggested preparationabout 120 hours
Fee per attempt€270

The pace is what separates OMPT-D from the shorter modules. OMPT-A gives 2.3 minutes per question; OMPT-D gives 8.6, and needs them, because one question can chain an algebraic rewrite, a derivative and an integral. Practising OMPT-D at OMPT-A speed produces rushed, half-simplified answers. Set a halfway checkpoint, question 11 at the 90-minute mark, and if one question has taken twice the average, enter your best answer and move on.

OMPT-D syllabus: the 11 chapters

The official OMPT-D syllabus lists every topic; the chapter list below is the same one we break down on the OMPT-D syllabus page.

  1. Numbers: fractions, exponents and roots, worked exactly.
  2. Algebra: expanding, factorising and simplifying expressions.
  3. Linear formulas and equations: solving and rearranging linear relations.
  4. Systems of linear equations: solving two or more linear equations together.
  5. Quadratic equations: solving and factorising quadratics.
  6. Functions: properties and graphs of functions.
  7. Exponential functions and logarithms: exponential and logarithmic equations and rules.
  8. Differentiation: derivative rules, tangent lines and extrema.
  9. Trigonometry: the trigonometric functions and their equations.
  10. Geometry: lines, shapes and coordinates.
  11. Integration: antiderivatives, substitution and definite integrals.

Chapters 1 to 8 overlap with OMPT-A. The last three, Trigonometry, Geometry and Integration, are the ones most OMPT-D candidates have never studied in a structured way, and the reason the provider's hour estimate is 120 rather than 80.

Which universities require OMPT-D

Our data holds 31 programme entries that accept OMPT-D. The twelve below are the best-known; the full university list has the rest with a source link for each row, and OMPT passing scores sorts them by threshold.

Econometrics and computer science programmes dominate the list, and the quantitative economics faculties set the highest bar. Several programmes list alternatives next to OMPT-D. KU Leuven accepts SAT (730 Maths) or ACT (32 Maths); Radboud, Leiden and VU accept Boswell-Bèta or CCVX; Maastricht runs its own on-site entrance exam. Where the attempt rule says "not stated", the programme page does not publish one, so ask admissions before you use a first attempt as a trial run.

OMPT-D pass marks

OMPT-D thresholds in our data run from 55% to above 75%. Radboud University sets 55% for Mathematics, Computing Science and Molecular Life Sciences. The largest group sits at 60%: KU Leuven, VU Amsterdam, Leiden, Maastricht and LUT. The University of Amsterdam, Tilburg and Vilnius University ask 70%, and Erasmus School of Economics asks more than 75% for its two econometrics tracks, counting the first attempt only.

Aim 10 to 15 points above your programme's minimum on a full-length mock before you book. A 60% programme wants a mock score of 70 to 75%; the Erasmus econometrics threshold means practising at 85% or better, because there is no second attempt to fall back on.

How hard is OMPT-D

By syllabus size, OMPT-D is the hardest module. It has 242 topics, against 226 for OMPT-B, 176 for OMPT-A, 161 for OMPT-E, 149 for OMPT-F, 119 for OMPT-G and 66 for OMPT-C. It is one of three modules with a 120-hour preparation estimate; OMPT-B is at 100 hours, OMPT-A at 80, OMPT-C at 40.

ModuleQuestionsTimeMinutes per questionTopicsSuggested hours
OMPT-A52120 min2.317680
OMPT-B64150 min2.3226100
OMPT-C30120 min4.06640
OMPT-D21180 min8.6242120
OMPT-F21180 min8.614980

The question count hides that difficulty. OMPT-F shares the 21-question, 180-minute format but has 149 topics; OMPT-D packs 242 into the same 21 questions, so almost every question chains material from more than one chapter and there is no chapter you can safely skip. The best predictor of the result is still preparation itself: the provider reports that students who worked through its learning materials scored 76% on average on their first attempt, and those who did not scored 40%. The full comparison across modules is in how hard is the OMPT.

Example OMPT-D question with worked solution

This example was written by Examify for the OMPT-D syllabus page. It is our own question, not a past paper.

Question (Differentiation, product and chain rule): differentiate f(x) = x² · e^(3x).

  1. This is a product, so use f′ = u′v + uv′ with u = x² and v = e^(3x).
  2. u′ = 2x, and the chain rule gives v′ = 3e^(3x).
  3. Substitute: f′(x) = 2x·e^(3x) + x²·3e^(3x), then take out x·e^(3x).

Answer: f′(x) = x·e^(3x)·(2 + 3x).

On the real exam a computer algebra system checks the final answer and a mathematician reviews the formatting, so a dropped factor of 3 or an unsimplified expression earns nothing, however good the working was.

How to prepare for OMPT-D

The provider's 120 hours is a figure for someone relearning most of the syllabus. Start with a diagnostic and let the result set your own number.

  1. Learn the answer editor first. The free OMPT practice test gives two of the harder OMPT-D questions in the real answer box with a worked solution after each. Do it before the diagnostic so input errors do not distort the score.
  2. Sit one full-length mock under exam conditions: 21 questions, 180 minutes, no notes. Examify's OMPT-D generation-1 mock matches the question count and time limit, or use the provider's own mock. Score it per chapter.
  3. Convert the score into hours. Add up the share of the 242 topics in chapters where you scored under 70% and multiply 120 hours by that share. The method is worked through in how long does OMPT preparation take.
  4. Work the chapters from weakest to strongest, using the OMPT-D syllabus as a checklist. For most candidates that means Trigonometry, Geometry and Integration first, then Differentiation and Functions, with Numbers and Algebra left for a timed sweep at the end.
  5. Time every set from the second week at 8.6 minutes per question, and drill exact, simplified final answers. A 30-day version of this plan, with the OMPT-D adaptation, is in improve your OMPT score in 30 days. That plan works for OMPT-D from a 55% diagnostic or higher at 4 hours a day; below that, plan 6 to 8 weeks.
  6. Sit a second full mock in the last week. Book the real exam only when it clears your programme's minimum by 10 to 15 points.

OMPT-D cost

One OMPT-D attempt costs €270, against €240 for OMPT-A, B, C, E and G; only OMPT-F shares the €270 fee. Every attempt is bought separately, so a retake costs another €270 and three attempts cost €810. A slot must be booked at least 72 hours ahead; short-notice booking exists at an extra fee. Results and the digital certificate arrive within 8 business days.

The cheapest way to avoid a second attempt is to know your score before the first one. Examify's full-length mock exams start from €39.99, with a worked solution for every question. The full breakdown of fees, add-ons and what a retake does to your budget is in how much does the OMPT cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is OMPT-D harder than OMPT-A?

OMPT-D covers more: 242 topics in 11 chapters against 176 topics in 8 chapters for OMPT-A, and it adds trigonometry, geometry and integration. The pace is different too. OMPT-A gives about 2.3 minutes per question, OMPT-D about 8.6, because each OMPT-D question chains several topics. The provider suggests 120 hours of preparation for OMPT-D and 80 for OMPT-A.

Which universities ask for OMPT-D?

Mostly econometrics, computer science, data science and engineering programmes. Examples in our data: Erasmus School of Economics (Econometrics, above 75%), University of Amsterdam (Econometrics and Data Science, 70%), Tilburg University (70%), Maastricht University (Computer Science, 60%), VU Amsterdam (Computer Science, 60%), KU Leuven (Business Engineering, 60%) and Radboud University (Computing Science, 55%).

How many questions does OMPT-D have?

OMPT-D has 21 questions and a time limit of 180 minutes, which works out at about 8.6 minutes per question. That is far fewer questions than OMPT-A (52) or OMPT-B (64), but every question is multi-step and typically combines material from more than one of the 11 chapters, so the extra time is needed.

What is the OMPT-D pass mark?

There is no single pass mark. Each programme sets its own minimum. In the programmes we track, OMPT-D thresholds range from 55% (Radboud University, several Lithuanian master's programmes) through 60% (KU Leuven, VU Amsterdam, Leiden, Maastricht) and 70% (University of Amsterdam, Tilburg, Vilnius University) to above 75% at Erasmus School of Economics.

How long should I prepare for OMPT-D?

The test provider suggests about 120 hours, the highest figure of any OMPT module together with OMPT-E and OMPT-G. At 15 hours a week that is 8 weeks; at 30 hours a week, 4 weeks of near full-time study. If a timed mock already puts you at 55% or higher, a 30-day plan at 4 hours a day is realistic. Below that, plan 6 to 8 weeks.

Can I use a calculator on OMPT-D?

Only the on-screen calculator built into the exam. Your own calculator is not allowed. You may have up to three blank A4 sheets, pencils and an eraser, no pens, and the proctor has you tear up the sheets on camera after you submit. Answers are checked by a computer algebra system, so the final answer has to be exact and simplified.
