OMPT-F guide (2026): syllabus, difficulty, universities, pass marks and price

OMPT-F is the depth module of the OMPT series: 21 questions in 180 minutes on 6 chapters (algebra, linear and quadratic equations, functions, exponential functions and logarithms, differentiation) with 149 topics. Business and economics bachelors at VU Amsterdam, UvA, Radboud, RSM, NHH, BI and LUT accept it. An attempt costs €270 and the test provider suggests about 80 hours of preparation.

OMPT-F exam format

The figures below come from the test provider's syllabus and pricing pages.

The pace is the first thing to get used to. OMPT-A gives 2.3 minutes per question; OMPT-F gives 8.6, because its questions are multi-step. Practising at OMPT-A speed produces rushed, half-simplified answers, and an unsimplified final answer scores nothing. Set a checkpoint at the 90-minute mark: you should be past question 10.

OMPT-F syllabus: the 6 chapters

The official OMPT-F syllabus lists 149 topics in six chapters. There is no trigonometry, geometry, integration or statistics.

• Algebra: manipulating expressions, exponents, roots, factorisation and algebraic fractions, the tools every later chapter depends on.
• Linear formulas and equations: linear relations, solving and rearranging linear equations and inequalities.
• Quadratic equations: solving quadratic equations by factorising and by formula, and working with their factorised forms.
• Functions: domain, composition, inverses, fractional functions and asymptotes, and reading the behaviour of a function from its formula.
• Exponential functions and logarithms: exponential growth and decay, logarithm rules and solving exponential and logarithmic equations.
• Differentiation: derivatives of standard functions and the product, quotient and chain rules, applied to functions from the earlier chapters.

Which universities require OMPT-F

OMPT-F is asked for by business and economics programmes, often as an alternative to OMPT-A. Our data has nine programmes at seven universities, all listed here.

At VU Amsterdam the OMPT-F minimum is 5 points lower than the OMPT-A minimum, but an OMPT-F attempt costs €30 more. At UvA the OMPT-F route is one of the Mathematics A certificate routes for HBO-propaedeuse applicants, and only one attempt counts. Requirements change between intakes, so confirm on the programme page linked from our universities list and compare thresholds on OMPT passing scores.

OMPT-F pass marks

OMPT-F pass marks in our data run from 55% to 75%. Radboud University sits at the bottom with 55%. The middle is crowded at 60%: UvA (both programmes), VU Amsterdam, NHH, BI and LUT. Rotterdam School of Management asks 75% for its International Business Administration bachelor and allows two attempts at most.

Aim for your programme's minimum plus 10 to 15 points on a timed mock before you book. A 60% requirement means mocks at 70 to 75%; the RSM 75% means mocks at 85% or higher. The margin covers answer-format slips, and at UvA there is no second attempt to fall back on.

How hard is OMPT-F

OMPT-F is hard in a different way from its neighbours. Compare the three modules a business applicant is most likely to meet.

Against OMPT-A, OMPT-F drops Numbers and Systems of linear equations, keeps the other six chapters, and asks fewer, longer questions. Against OMPT-D it shares the 21-question, 180-minute format but leaves out trigonometry, geometry and integration, which is why the suggested preparation is 80 hours rather than 120.

The figure that matters more than any module comparison comes from the test provider: students who worked through the learning materials scored 76% on average on their first attempt, students who did not scored 40%. Example OMPT-F question with worked solution

This question is written by Examify in the style of the Functions chapter. It is not a past paper; the test provider does not publish real OMPT-F questions.

Find the inverse of f(x) = (2x − 1)/(x + 3).

1. Write y = (2x − 1)/(x + 3) and multiply both sides by (x + 3): y(x + 3) = 2x − 1.
2. Expand and collect the x-terms on one side: yx − 2x = −1 − 3y, so x(y − 2) = −(1 + 3y).
3. Divide by (y − 2) and swap the letters.

Answer: f⁻¹(x) = (3x + 1)/(2 − x), for x ≠ 2.

The OMPT checks answers with a computer algebra system, so the answer has to be exact, simplified and complete, including the domain restriction. A second worked example, on the quotient rule, is on the OMPT-F syllabus page.

How to prepare for OMPT-F

The plan below spends the suggested 80 hours in five blocks. At 13 hours a week it takes 6 weeks; at 10 hours a week, 8 weeks. Adjust the hours by the share of the 149 topics you still need to relearn, which the first step measures.

1. Diagnostic mock (3 hours). Sit a full-length 21-question, 180-minute mock before you study. Score it per chapter and rank the six chapters from weakest to strongest. 2. Algebra, linear formulas and quadratic equations (20 hours). Work through the OMPT-F syllabus topic by topic, without a calculator, until factorisation and algebraic fractions are automatic. Every later question depends on this block.
3. Functions and exponential functions and logarithms (25 hours). Inverses, composition, asymptotes, logarithm rules and exponential equations. Time every set from this block onwards at 8 to 9 minutes per question.
4. Differentiation (20 hours). Standard derivatives, then product, quotient and chain rules combined in one question, then derivatives applied to the functions from block 3.
5. Two more full-length timed mocks (12 hours). One at the two-thirds mark, one in the final week, with the on-screen calculator only. Any chapter still under your programme's minimum gets the remaining hours.

OMPT-F cost

An OMPT-F attempt costs €270, the higher of the two OMPT price bands (OMPT-A, B, C, E and G cost €240). Every attempt is bought separately, so a retake is another €270, and a slot has to be booked at least 72 hours ahead; short-notice booking exists at an extra fee.
