When to take the OMPT for a BI Norwegian Business School application

OMPT results arrive within 8 business days and a test slot has to be booked at least 72 hours in advance, so the last safe test date is about 12 calendar days before the application deadline. If you want one retake in reserve, sit the first attempt about 38 days before the deadline. Most programmes allow up to three attempts, each at the full fee, but some count only the first attempt, so confirm the rule on the programme page linked in the table.

Each attempt costs €240 (OMPT-A, B, C, E, G) or €270 (OMPT-D, F). A full-length timed mock before the first paid attempt shows whether you are already above the minimum score. How to book the OMPT, step by step.

BI Norwegian Business School OMPT requirements explained

BI Norwegian Business School requires OMPT-F with a minimum score of 60% for one programme, the Bachelor of Data Science for Business in Oslo, and allows a maximum of two attempts per intake. BI publishes one OMPT requirement, and it is unusual in two ways. First, the module is OMPT-F rather than the OMPT-A most business schools ask for. OMPT-F has no Numbers or Systems of linear equations chapter and instead goes deep on algebra, functions and differentiation, which fits a data science programme better than a broad first-year economics test. Second, the attempt limit is written per intake. The page does not say how the cap interacts with a later application cycle, so if your plan depends on that, ask BI admissions directly rather than assume.

The alternatives are diploma-based, not test-based: Norwegian Maths R1, or S1 plus S2, and IB Mathematics at grade 3 or higher in several tracks. There is no SAT, CCVX or on-site exam route on the page. Our earlier version of this post also noted that the BBA and the Bachelor in Digital Business describe strong maths skills as recommended, with no formal OMPT requirement. Examify is independent and not affiliated with the OMPT, SOWISO or any university.

Which OMPT module BI Norwegian Business School uses and what it looks like

BI uses OMPT-F only. Format facts are from the official syllabus page on omptest.org.

OMPT-F
Questions21
Time180 min (about 8.6 min per question)
Chapters / topics6 chapters, 149 topics
Suggested prep (official)~80 h

OMPT-F is the most advanced module in the series by depth rather than by breadth. Its six chapters are Algebra, Linear formulas and equations, Quadratic equations, Functions, Exponential functions and logarithms and Differentiation. Each of the 21 questions chains several topics, which is why the time allowance is 8.6 minutes per question against 2.3 on OMPT-A. Answers are typed into an on-screen input and graded by a computer algebra system, so a correct method with a half-simplified final answer scores nothing. The full topic list is on the OMPT-F syllabus.

BI Norwegian Business School OMPT minimum score in context

BI's 60% sits at the bottom of the 60 to 75% range most programmes use. Erasmus School of Economics asks IBEB applicants for 70% on OMPT-A and counts the first attempt only. Maastricht School of Business and Economics asks 75%. Tilburg University asks 70% with a maximum of two attempts. Rotterdam School of Management, which also accepts OMPT-F, asks 75%. Against those, 60% on OMPT-F means you can lose 8 of 21 questions and still pass.

That margin looks generous on paper. In practice, mock scores move 5 to 10 points between sittings, the proctored setting adds pressure, and every wrong final answer on a 21-question paper costs nearly 5 points. Aim 10 to 15 points above the threshold on your last mock, so 70 to 75%, before you spend the first of your two attempts. The full comparison of thresholds is on OMPT passing scores.

How to prepare for the BI Norwegian Business School OMPT test

The plan below uses the test provider's estimate of about 80 hours for OMPT-F. A diagnostic usually cuts that number.

  1. Sit a full-length diagnostic mock under exam conditions: 21 questions in 180 minutes, no notes, answers typed in the real format. Examify's free OMPT practice test shows two of the harder questions per module in the real answer box; the paid OMPT-F gen 1 mock matches the real question count and time limit, with a worked solution for every question.
  2. Score the mock per chapter across the six chapters. Chapters below about 70% get most of the hours; the rest get a timed sweep in the last week. For OMPT-F the hours usually go to Exponential functions and logarithms and Differentiation, because those questions stack the most steps. How to turn the chapter list into weeks is in how long OMPT preparation takes.
  3. Practise the answer format from the first week: exact forms, fully simplified expressions, correct notation for logarithms and derivatives. On OMPT-F a single unsimplified answer is worth as much as a whole topic.
  4. From the second week, time every set at 8.6 minutes per question. OMPT-F punishes rushing more than slowness; a paced 18 questions beats a hurried 21. A 30-day version of this schedule is in improve your OMPT score in 30 days.
  5. Sit a second full mock in the final week and book only when it lands at 70% or above. If it does not, move the date. With two attempts per intake, the first one is not a practice run. For what the real paper feels like, read how hard is the OMPT.

Booking, deadlines and results for BI Norwegian Business School applicants

A slot must be booked at least 72 hours in advance. Each OMPT-F attempt costs €270 and is bought separately, so the two attempts BI allows cost €540 if you need both. Results and the digital certificate arrive within 8 business days, which is 10 to 12 calendar days depending on the weekday.

Take the application deadline for Data Science for Business from BI's admission page and count back from it. One attempt with no buffer means a test date about 12 calendar days before the deadline. With the second attempt held in reserve, plan the first sitting about 38 days before: 12 days for results, 14 to fix weak chapters and rebook, 12 for the second result. Booking steps and the proctoring checklist are in how to book the OMPT; the stored requirement and the date we last checked it are on the BI Norwegian Business School page.
