Hanze University of Applied Sciences Math Entrance Exam (OMPT)

Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen names the OMPT for one bachelor programme: Creative Media and Game Technologies (CMGT). Applicants whose final transcript does not show a passing grade in mathematics can take OMPT-A instead, and the minimum is 55%, which Hanze also writes as 5.5. Hanze UAS OMPT requirements by programme

The rule on the CMGT page is short. Mathematics is mandatory, and you must have a passing grade in mathematics on your final transcript. If your mathematics level is insufficient, you can take the OMPT-A mathematics test with a minimum score of 55% (5.5). The page adds that additional costs apply and links to omptest.org. That is the whole text. It sets no attempt limit, no validity period for the certificate and no date by which the result has to reach Hanze.

So the OMPT is a repair route, not a test every applicant sits. If your diploma lists mathematics with a pass, the maths part of your file is done. The test is for applicants who dropped maths before their final year, failed it on the final transcript, or hold a diploma with no separate maths grade. The page does not define "insufficient" beyond the passing-grade rule, so if your case is unclear, ask CMGT admissions before you pay for a slot and tell them exactly which diploma and grade you hold.

The maths proof is one piece of a larger file. CMGT also asks for an upper secondary diploma at Dutch HAVO level (Hanze lists examples such as the Abitur or Fachhochschulreife, the Baccalauréat, A levels, the Polish Matura and the Turkish Lise Diploması), IELTS Academic 6.0 overall with no sub-score below 5.5 and at most two sub-scores of 5.5, and the online MPT Survey (Multicultural Personality Test), which you must complete within 10 working days of the invitation. Hanze issues a Letter of Admission only after the whole application has been assessed, so a missing maths certificate holds up the rest.

What other Hanze programmes ask instead

The Mechanical Engineering row is the one to note if you are an engineering applicant: it asks for VWO-level maths and physics, which is well beyond OMPT-A, and the named external route is Boswell-Bèta. For CMGT the bar is lower and the OMPT-A route is explicit.

Which OMPT module Hanze uses and what it looks like

Hanze uses OMPT-A only. The figures below come from the official OMPT-A syllabus.

The eight chapters are Numbers, Algebra, Linear formulas and equations, Systems of linear equations, Quadratic equations, Functions, Exponential functions and logarithms, and Differentiation. The first five are secondary-school algebra. Functions and Differentiation are the largest chapters. For a 55% target the order matters more than full coverage: you do not need every chapter at full strength, but you do need the five algebra chapters and Functions to be solid before Differentiation gets any serious time, because the later chapters are built on them. Hanze's 55% minimum in context

Among published OMPT-A minimums, 55% sits near the bottom. Arcada University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki asks 50% for International Business. Radboud accepts 55% on OMPT-A or OMPT-F for Economics and Business Economics, and Vilnius University uses 55% on OMPT-A for its economics and business bachelors. Across town in Groningen, the University of Groningen's Faculty of Economics and Business asks 60% on OMPT-A, and Utrecht and Maastricht SBE sit at 75%. On OMPT-A, 55% means about 29 correct answers out of 52, so you can miss 23. That sounds generous, and it is. The catch is who takes this route: by definition, applicants whose school maths was weak, failed or dropped. A pass mark is only low relative to where you start. Aim for 70% on a full timed mock before you book. The 15-point cushion covers normal variation between sittings plus the real exam's proctor, ID check and strict final-answer grading. Hanze publishes no attempt limit, but every retake costs another €240 and about 12 days of waiting, which is time you may not have near a deadline.

How to prepare for the Hanze OMPT-A

The official estimate for OMPT-A is about 80 hours, and that assumes full coverage. With a 55% target you can spend those hours unevenly. The plan below puts the secure points first and leaves Differentiation for last.

1. Sit a full-length diagnostic mock first: 52 questions, 120 minutes, timer on, answers typed. The free OMPT practice test shows two of the harder OMPT-A questions in the real answer box so you learn the input rules; then take the full OMPT-A generation-1 mock built by Examify.
2. Score the mock per chapter. If Numbers and Algebra come out below 60%, start there before anything else. Fractions, powers and brackets feed every later chapter, and gaps here cost marks everywhere.
3. Work through Linear formulas and equations, Systems of linear equations and Quadratic equations next. These are the most dependable marks on the paper for someone rebuilding from a weak base.
4. Then do Functions, followed by Exponential functions and logarithms. Leave Differentiation until the rest is stable, and learn the standard derivative rules well enough to take the routine questions.
5. Practise in the answer format from day one. The OMPT checks final answers with a computer algebra system and a mathematician reviews formatting, so a correct method with an ambiguous final answer earns nothing.
6. From the second half of your plan, run drill sets at 2.3 minutes per question, then take a second full mock about a week before your planned date. Book only if it lands at 70% or above. If it does not, move the slot rather than pay for an attempt you expect to fail.

Booking, deadlines and results for Hanze applicants

An OMPT-A slot has to be booked at least 72 hours in advance, and each attempt costs €240 (€270 applies only to OMPT-D and OMPT-F, which Hanze does not use). That fee is the "additional cost" the CMGT page refers to; it is paid to the test provider, not to Hanze. Results and the digital certificate arrive within 8 business days, which is about 12 calendar days depending on the weekday.

Hanze's general deadlines for a September start are 15 August for students who do not need a visa or residence permit (EU/EEA) and 1 June for students who do. Applicants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Iran, Ghana, Afghanistan and Nigeria have an earlier deadline of 1 May. The CMGT page does not say whether an OMPT result can follow after you apply, so treat your deadline as the date the certificate should be in your file.

Count backwards from it. With one attempt and no buffer, the last safe test date is about 12 calendar days before the deadline: around 20 May for non-EU applicants and around 3 August for EU applicants. If you want one retake in reserve, count 38 days: 12 for results, 14 to fix the weak chapters and rebook, and 12 for the second result. That puts a first attempt around 24 April for the 1 June deadline, around 24 March for the 1 May deadline, and around 8 July for EU applicants. EU applicants who apply between 25 June and 1 July get only 5 working days for the MPT Survey instead of 10, another reason not to leave the maths to the end.
