Erasmus University Rotterdam OMPT Requirements: IBEB & Econometrics

Erasmus School of Economics (ESE) at Erasmus University Rotterdam accepts the OMPT as a mathematics proficiency certificate, but the module and the minimum score depend on the programme. IBEB accepts OMPT-A at 70% or OMPT-B at 60%; the two econometrics tracks ask for OMPT-D. One rule applies to all of them: ESE counts your first attempt only.

ESE requirements at a glance

The IBEB certificate deadline is 15 January. For the econometrics programmes the mathematics result has to be available before 1 May, because the score feeds into the selection decision. Rotterdam School of Management (IBA) runs a separate exam with its own rules; the Erasmus University Rotterdam page lists all three side by side.

IBEB: OMPT-A at 70% or OMPT-B at 60%

IBEB is a numerus fixus programme with 700 places for 2026-2027. If your diploma does not meet the VWO Mathematics A (7.0) or Mathematics B (6.0) equivalent, you submit one of four certificates with your application: an OMPT result, a VWO deelcertificaat, a Boswell-Bèta certificate or a CCVX certificate. ESE itself calls the OMPT the most convenient option because it runs online, worldwide, with no fixed sitting dates.

The OMPT thresholds are 70% on OMPT-A or 60% on OMPT-B. You pick the module when you book; there is no requirement to sit both. Whichever you choose, the score from your first attempt is the one ESE looks at. A second attempt on the same module, or a switch to the other module after a weak first result, is not accepted.

Econometrics and Operations Research, and BSc² Econometrics and Economics: OMPT-D

Both econometrics tracks require a background equivalent to VWO Mathematics B and list OMPT-D as the accepted OMPT module, alongside a VWO deelcertificaat, Boswell-Bèta or CCVX in Mathematics B. The admission page states the OMPT-D threshold as >75%, and the same first-attempt rule applies. The threshold is printed in the section on HBO propaedeutic applicants; if you apply with a foreign diploma, confirm the figure on the programme page before you book.

OMPT-D is a different exam from OMPT-A and OMPT-B: 21 questions in 180 minutes, 242 topics, €270 per attempt, and the test provider suggests about 120 hours of preparation. The OMPT-D syllabus covers the full chapter list, including geometry, trigonometry and integration.

OMPT-A or OMPT-B? Side by side

The IBEB choice is the one most applicants get wrong, because the lower percentage on OMPT-B looks like the easier route. The two modules differ in length and content, and the 10-point gap in the threshold only pays off if you already know the extra material.

OMPT-B contains everything in OMPT-A plus roughly 50 more topics, most of them in trigonometry and integration. The official OMPT-A syllabus and OMPT-B syllabus list each topic; Examify's OMPT-A and OMPT-B pages group them by chapter.

A concrete rule of thumb for IBEB applicants:

• Pick OMPT-B at 60% if you have already studied trigonometric functions and integration at school (VWO Mathematics B, A-level Mathematics, IB Analysis and Approaches HL, or a similar track) and your weak points are in speed and precision rather than in missing chapters. On OMPT-B you can lose 40% of the marks and still pass; on OMPT-A only 30%.
• Pick OMPT-A at 70% if you have never covered integration or trigonometry, or covered them more than two years ago. Learning two new chapters for a single attempt adds about 20 hours of preparation and creates exactly the kind of weak area that a one-shot exam punishes.
• If you sit a full-length mock of both modules and score above 75% on OMPT-A but below 65% on OMPT-B, take OMPT-A. The margin above the threshold matters more than the threshold itself.

One attempt at €240: what the no-resit rule changes

Each OMPT attempt costs €240 for OMPT-A and OMPT-B, bought separately. At universities that allow up to three attempts, a poor first result costs another €240 and a few weeks. At ESE it costs the certificate route entirely: a second attempt is not accepted, so for IBEB the exam is effectively a single €240 shot. Two consequences follow. First, do not book the exam as a diagnostic. Use a mock for that, and only book when your mock scores sit comfortably above the threshold. Second, the score you need is not the threshold but a safety margin above it, because the real exam is proctored, timed and graded strictly: a computer algebra system checks each final answer and a mathematician reviews the formatting, so an answer has to be mathematically correct and unambiguous to count.

Backward timeline from the deadline

Work the calendar backwards from the ESE date that applies to you, using the test provider's published lead times.

1. Certificate deadline: 15 January for IBEB, 1 May for the econometrics programmes.
2. Results arrive within 8 business days. Around the winter holidays 8 business days can stretch to 12 or more calendar days, so count back at least two weeks from the deadline.
3. Add a buffer of one week for uploading the certificate and for anything that goes wrong on exam day, such as a proctoring problem.
4. Booking must be made at least 72 hours before the slot.

For IBEB that arithmetic puts the latest safe exam date around 20 to 25 December and the booking around 17 to 22 December. Mid-December is the more comfortable target, because it leaves time to actually use the buffer. For the econometrics tracks the same calculation gives an exam date around 10 April and a booking by 7 April. The test provider sells an optional fast grading service that returns results within 4 business days; it is priced separately per attempt and does not change the first-attempt rule.

Preparing for a single attempt

The test provider reports that students who prepared scored 76% on average on their first attempt, and those who did not scored 40%. For IBEB that gap is the difference between passing OMPT-A and failing both modules. The published preparation estimates are about 80 hours for OMPT-A and 100 hours for OMPT-B; spread over ten weeks that is 8 to 10 hours a week, starting in early October for a mid-December exam.

A workable order:

• Weeks 1 to 2: sit a full-length mock under exam conditions, once for each module you are considering, and decide between OMPT-A and OMPT-B based on the scores.
• Weeks 3 to 8: work through the syllabus chapter by chapter, spending most time on the chapters where the mock showed gaps.
• Weeks 9 to 10: two more timed mocks. Book the real exam only once both land at least 10 points above your threshold.
