University of Groningen Math Entrance Exam (OMPT)

The University of Groningen (RUG) uses three OMPT modules. The Faculty of Economics and Business asks OMPT-A at 60% for Business Administration, International Business, and Economics and Business Economics, and OMPT-B at 60% for Econometrics and Operations Research. The Faculty of Science and Engineering asks OMPT-D at 65%, maximum 2 attempts. Examify verified this on the official pages on 2026-07-23.

University of Groningen OMPT requirements by programme

Two faculties at Groningen publish an OMPT route: the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) per programme, and the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) at the level of its admission routes.

The pattern follows the mathematics load of the first year. FEB puts its business and economics bachelors on the entry-level OMPT-A and its one quantitative bachelor, Econometrics and Operations Research, on OMPT-B, the module that adds trigonometry and integration. Both sit at 60%, one of the lower published thresholds in the Netherlands. FEB also gives applicants more alternatives than most faculties: a James Boswell VWO Wiskunde A certificate, CCVX Maths A or B, or FEB's own Mathematics Entrance Exam count for the OMPT-A programmes, and an extended version of that FEB exam counts for Econometrics. The FEB page we verified does not print an attempt limit, so ask FEB admissions before you treat a first booking as a trial run.

FSE takes a different route. Its requirement of 65% on OMPT-D with a maximum of 2 attempts appears on the faculty's Colloquium Doctum 21+ and Preparatory Year admission pages, so it is an admission-route rule rather than a line on one programme page. If you are applying to a named FSE bachelor such as Computing Science, Applied Mathematics or Physics, confirm on that programme's own entry-requirements page that the same module and score apply before you book.

Which OMPT module the University of Groningen uses and what it looks like

OMPT-A is the FEB module for Business Administration, International Business, and Economics and Business Economics.

The eight chapters are Numbers, Algebra, Linear formulas and equations, Systems of linear equations, Quadratic equations, Functions, Exponential functions and logarithms, and Differentiation. The chapter list is on the OMPT-A syllabus page.

OMPT-B is the module for Econometrics and Operations Research.

OMPT-B contains all eight OMPT-A chapters and adds Trigonometry and Integration. An applicant coming from a Wiskunde A background has usually never studied integration, which is where the extra 20 hours in the test provider's estimate go. See the OMPT-B syllabus page.

OMPT-D is the module for the FSE bachelor programmes that require mathematics.

Its eleven chapters are the OMPT-B list plus Geometry: Numbers, Algebra, Linear formulas and equations, Systems of linear equations, Quadratic equations, Functions, Exponential functions and logarithms, Differentiation, Trigonometry, Geometry, and Integration. With 21 questions, each one is worth close to 5% of the score, and a 65% bar means about 14 correct answers. Read the OMPT-D syllabus page before you plan.

University of Groningen OMPT minimum score in context

Most programmes that accept the OMPT set their bar between 60% and 75%. Groningen's FEB sits at the bottom of that range with 60% on OMPT-A and OMPT-B, below Erasmus School of Economics, which asks 70% on OMPT-A for IBEB and counts the first attempt only, below Tilburg University at 70% with a maximum of 2 attempts, and well below Maastricht's School of Business and Economics at 75%. The FSE requirement of 65% on OMPT-D is mid-range: higher than Radboud University's 55% on OMPT-D, lower than the 70% and 75% marks common in economics faculties.

A low bar is not a reason to prepare less. The test provider reports that students who prepared scored 76% on average on their first attempt, against 40% for those who did not, and 40% fails at every Groningen faculty. Aim for a mock score 10 to 15 points above your minimum: 70 to 75% for the FEB modules, 75 to 80% for OMPT-D. That margin matters most at FSE, where the second attempt is the last one. How to prepare for the University of Groningen OMPT test

The plan below follows the test provider's own hour estimates: 80 for OMPT-A, 100 for OMPT-B, 120 for OMPT-D.

1. Sit a full-length diagnostic mock before studying. Examify's free OMPT practice test shows the answer box and two harder questions per module; the paid OMPT-A generation-1 mock, OMPT-B mock or OMPT-D mock matches the real question count and time limit.
2. Score the mock per chapter and rank the chapters from weakest to strongest. On OMPT-A, Functions and Differentiation carry the most topics and deserve the largest share of the 80 hours.
3. Work chapter by chapter from the weakest up. OMPT-B and OMPT-D applicants should give Trigonometry and Integration (and Geometry for OMPT-D) their own block, since these are the chapters a Wiskunde A background is missing.
4. Practise the answer format. The OMPT grades a typed final answer checked by a computer-algebra system, so an exact, simplified expression counts and an ambiguous one does not. Drill 20 questions a day in the on-screen editor.
5. Train the clock at your module's pace: about 2.3 minutes per question on OMPT-A and OMPT-B, about 8.6 on OMPT-D. Skip and return rather than sink ten minutes into one item.

Booking, deadlines and results for University of Groningen applicants

The OMPT is booked on omptest.org at least 72 hours before the slot and taken online with a live proctor. Each attempt is paid separately: €240 for OMPT-A and OMPT-B, €270 for OMPT-D. Results and the digital certificate arrive within 8 business days.

The University of Groningen publishes its own application deadlines per programme and intake, and this page does not repeat them; take the date from your programme page. Counting back from it, the last safe test date is about 12 calendar days before the deadline. If you want one retake in reserve, which the FSE 2-attempt rule allows once, count back 38 days: 12 for results, 14 to fix weak chapters and rebook, 12 for the second result.
