KU Leuven Engineering Technology OMPT-G (2027-28): SAT, ACT and OMPT-D no longer accepted
KU Leuven has changed the maths requirement for its Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Leuven. For the 2026-27 intake, international applicants could prove their level with the SAT (730 or more in maths), the ACT (32 or more in maths) or OMPT-D (60% or more). For the 2027-28 intake, all three are gone. The admission page now asks for one thing: a valid OMPT-G result of at least 60%. Examify compared the two versions of the official page line by line on 23 September 2026. KU Leuven labels the 2027-28 text "Final version: 30/09/2026", so check the page again after that date.
If you are applying now to start in September 2027, this is your rule. The rest of this guide covers what changed, who can take the on-campus starting test instead, what OMPT-G looks like, how to schedule it against your deadline, and a preparation plan built for the students most affected: those who were planning to use the SAT or OMPT-D.
KU Leuven Engineering Technology OMPT-G requirement in short
- Programme: Bachelor of Engineering Technology, Faculty of Engineering Technology, Group T Leuven Campus.
- Who it applies to: applicants whose previous degree was not obtained at an institution of the Flemish Community.
- Test: OMPT-G, minimum 60%. No other test is listed.
- Section name on the page: "Mathematics and Science Proficiency" (it used to be "Mathematics Proficiency").
- Deadline for the result: the official result must be available before the application deadline. Late results are not accepted.
- Alternative: holders of a European Baccalaureate, IB Diploma, EU-issued GCE or EU degree may instead attend the starting test in Leuven at the beginning of July.
- English: TOEFL iBT 85, IELTS Academic 6.5 or Cambridge C1 Advanced / C2 Proficiency 176, unless you are exempt.
- Cost of one OMPT-G attempt: €240.
What changed between 2026-27 and 2027-28
The KU Leuven page shows both academic years side by side in two tabs. The diploma and English sections are almost identical. The maths section is not.
| Requirement | 2026-27 intake | 2027-28 intake |
|---|---|---|
| Name of the section | Mathematics Proficiency | Mathematics and Science Proficiency |
| SAT | Accepted, min. 730 on maths | Not accepted |
| ACT | Accepted, min. 32 on maths | Not accepted |
| OMPT | OMPT-D, min. 60% | OMPT-G, min. 60% |
| Validity of the result | "Valid for maximum 5 years" | No validity period printed; the result must be "valid" |
| Timing rule | Book the test in time yourself | Official result must be available before the application deadline; late submissions not accepted |
| On-campus alternative | Positioning test, early July | Starting test, early July |
| GCE with a grade C | Can still be eligible after a favourable Admissions Committee decision | Clause removed; minimum grade B in each of the three A-Levels |
| Visa advice | Aimed at non-EEA IB and EB holders | Aimed at non-EEA IB and French Baccalaureate holders |
| Extra online assessment | "Additional online assessment" | Named STIS; not taking part when invited "may affect your application negatively" |
| English requirement | Unchanged | Unchanged |
Three of these rows matter for almost every applicant.
The first is the loss of the SAT and ACT. Students at international and American-curriculum schools often already have a strong SAT maths score, and for 2026-27 that was the easiest route: send the score report, done. For 2027-28 that score does not count here, no matter how high it is. If you took the SAT for applications to other universities, you now need a separate OMPT-G result for KU Leuven.
The second is the switch from OMPT-D to OMPT-G. These are different tests, not two names for the same one. OMPT-D is the broad calculus module with 21 long questions. OMPT-G has 26 questions and adds a physics chapter and a chemistry chapter. KU Leuven renamed the section to "Mathematics and Science Proficiency" for that reason: the faculty now checks basic science as well as maths before you arrive.
The third is timing. The 2026-27 text mostly told applicants to book early. The 2027-28 text is blunter: your official result has to exist before the application deadline, and a result that arrives after it is not accepted. There is no grace period written into the page.
Why KU Leuven moved from OMPT-D to OMPT-G
KU Leuven does not explain the decision on the admission page, so treat what follows as our reading of the two syllabi, not an official statement.
Engineering Technology is an applied engineering bachelor. Its first year leans on mechanics, basic chemistry, trigonometry and geometry as much as on pure calculus. OMPT-G tests exactly that mix: equations and functions, trigonometry, two geometry chapters, sequences and series, then mechanics and chemistry. The SAT and ACT test maths only, and OMPT-D tests maths only. None of the three old routes told the faculty anything about an applicant's physics or chemistry.
The page also ends with a sentence that was already there in 2026-27 but reads differently next to the new test: students are advised that "a sound basis in mathematics and science is essential" before starting. With OMPT-G, the admission test now checks both halves of that sentence.
Who has to take the OMPT-G and who can take the starting test instead
The OMPT-G rule applies to students who did not obtain their previous degree at an institution of the Flemish Community. Students with a Flemish secondary diploma follow a different track: they do not submit an online application and must take part in the starting test, whose result is not binding.
For everyone else, the page gives two paths.
Path 1: submit an OMPT-G result of 60% or more before the application deadline. Anyone can use this path.
Path 2: skip the OMPT-G and attend the starting test on the Group T Leuven Campus at the beginning of July. Only these diplomas qualify for path 2:
- a European Baccalaureate diploma
- an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP)
- a General Certificate of Education (GCE) obtained in a country that is part of the European Union
- a secondary or university degree from a recognised institution in a country that is part of the European Union
The starting test result is not binding, but attendance is mandatory if you have no OMPT-G result. The page is clear about what happens if you do neither: if you do not attend the starting test and cannot provide a sufficient OMPT-G score, the faculty "has the right to deny admission to the programme".
Path 2 looks easier on paper, but it has two catches. You have to be physically in Leuven in early July, and you only find out where you stand a few weeks before the programme starts. KU Leuven itself recommends the OMPT-G to anyone who is not sure they can travel. It singles out non-EEA applicants with an IB Diploma or a French Baccalaureate, because they will need a visa to come to Belgium for a test in July. A visa appointment, a flight and a hotel for a non-binding test cost far more than one OMPT-G attempt at €240 taken from home.
Which applicants are hit hardest by the change
Different groups of applicants face different amounts of new work.
| Your background | 2026-27 route you would have used | What you need for 2027-28 |
|---|---|---|
| US or international school, SAT maths 730+ | Send SAT score | OMPT-G at 60% (SAT no longer counts) |
| ACT maths 32+ | Send ACT score | OMPT-G at 60% |
| Already sat or planned OMPT-D | OMPT-D at 60% | OMPT-G at 60% (OMPT-D not listed) |
| IB Diploma, non-EEA, needs a visa | OMPT-D or July positioning test | OMPT-G recommended by KU Leuven; July starting test possible but requires travel |
| IB Diploma, EU resident | July positioning test | July starting test or OMPT-G |
| French Baccalaureate, outside the EU | SAT, ACT or OMPT-D | OMPT-G (named in KU Leuven's visa advice) |
| GCE A-Levels from outside the EU | SAT, ACT or OMPT-D; grade C could be accepted by committee | OMPT-G; minimum grade B in all three A-Levels, maths and one science included |
| Non-EU national diploma (Turkey, India, Nigeria and so on) | SAT, ACT or OMPT-D | OMPT-G at 60% |
The SAT group has the largest gap to close. A 730 in SAT maths shows strong algebra and data skills, but the SAT does not test mechanics or chemistry, and its trigonometry and geometry coverage is lighter than the two OMPT-G geometry chapters. The format is also different: the OMPT has no multiple choice, so every answer is typed into an input box.
The OMPT-D group has the smallest maths gap but a new science gap. OMPT-D covers trigonometry, geometry and functions at a deeper level than OMPT-G does, plus differentiation and integration, which OMPT-G does not list as chapters. So a student who was ready for OMPT-D mostly needs to add sequences and series, mechanics and chemistry, and to adjust to a shorter time per question.
What the OMPT-G test looks like
OMPT-G is one of seven OMPT modules run by the test provider at omptest.org. These are the numbers from the official syllabus page:
| OMPT-G | |
|---|---|
| Questions | 26 |
| Time | 180 minutes |
| Time per question | about 6.9 minutes |
| Chapters | 11 |
| Topics | 119 |
| Suggested preparation | about 120 hours |
| Price per attempt | €240 |
| KU Leuven minimum | 60%, about 16 of 26 questions |
The chapter list, with the number of topics in each chapter as published on the syllabus:
| Chapter | Topics | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Linear formulas and equations | 13 | Formulas, linear functions, linear equations and inequalities |
| 2. Systems of linear equations | 8 | Equations of lines, solving systems |
| 3. Quadratic equations | 13 | Parabolas, solution methods, intersections, quadratic inequalities |
| 4. Functions | 29 | Domain and range, power, polynomial, root and rational functions, limits |
| 5. Exponential functions and logarithms | 13 | Exponential equations, logarithmic functions |
| 6. Sequences and series | 5 | Arithmetic and geometric sequences and series |
| 7. Trigonometry | 13 | Angles, trigonometric functions, trigonometric equations |
| 8. Geometry basics | 8 | Lines, angles, polygons, triangle calculations |
| 9. Geometry continued | 9 | Lines, circles, intersections |
| 10. Physics (mechanics) | 4 | Motion, forces, work and energy |
| 11. Chemistry | 4 | Substances, reactions, acids and bases, redox |
Two things stand out. Functions is the largest chapter by far, with 29 of the 119 topics, and it is the one place where limits appear. And the two science chapters are small on the topic list, 8 topics out of 119, but the test provider does not publish how many of the 26 questions come from each chapter. Do not plan on skipping them. If two or three questions come from mechanics and chemistry, that is already enough to decide whether you land at 58% or 62%.
The full topic list is on Examify's OMPT-G syllabus page, and the module overview with difficulty, pass marks at other universities and a worked chemistry question is in the OMPT-G guide.
OMPT-G versus OMPT-D: what you gain and what you lose
If you had started preparing for OMPT-D because of the 2026-27 rule, most of that work still helps. Here is how the two modules compare.
| OMPT-D (old KU Leuven route) | OMPT-G (new KU Leuven route) | |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 21 | 26 |
| Time | 180 minutes | 180 minutes |
| Minutes per question | about 8.6 | about 6.9 |
| Chapters | 11 | 11 |
| Topics | 242 | 119 |
| Differentiation and integration chapters | Yes | No |
| Sequences and series chapter | No | Yes |
| Physics and chemistry | No | Yes, one chapter each |
| Price per attempt | €270 | €240 |
| KU Leuven minimum | 60% | 60% |
OMPT-G has roughly half the topics of OMPT-D, drops the calculus chapters and costs €30 less per attempt. On the other side, you get less time per question, and two chapters come from subjects many applicants dropped a year or two before applying. Our comparison of OMPT-A, OMPT-D and OMPT-E and the OMPT-D guide have the full OMPT-D details if you want to check what carries over.
One practical point: with 26 questions, each one is worth a little under 4% of the score. At a 60% bar you can miss 10 questions and still pass, which is more room than the eight misses OMPT-D allowed at the same bar. That margin disappears quickly if you leave the science chapters unprepared.
What a 60% on OMPT-G really means
A 60% minimum puts KU Leuven in the middle of the published OMPT-G bars. LUT University asks 60% for Chemical and Process Engineering, Vilnius University asks 60% for Chemistry of Nanomaterials, Arcada asks 50% for Mechanical and Sustainable Engineering, and Amsterdam University College asks 70% for its Sciences major. The OMPT passing scores page keeps that list up to date.
In practice, 60% means 16 correct answers out of 26. Mock scores tend to move by 5 to 10 points from one sitting to the next, and the real exam adds a proctor, an ID check and a room scan, which cost most people a few points. Aim for 70 to 75% on your final full-length mock before you book. If your mocks sit at 62%, you are one bad morning away from a retake.
The KU Leuven page does not print an attempt limit for OMPT-G. That does not mean attempts are unlimited. It means the rule is not written there. Ask admissions before you treat your first booking as a practice run, and read our notes on OMPT retakes and attempt limits.
Example OMPT-G questions with worked solutions
These five questions are Examify's own examples written to the OMPT-G syllabus. They are not past papers; the test provider does not publish old OMPT-G exams. Each one targets a chapter that former SAT and OMPT-D candidates tend to underprepare.
Question 1, physics (mechanics). A car starts from rest and accelerates uniformly at 2.5 m/s² for 8 seconds. What is its speed after 8 seconds, and how far has it travelled?
- Speed: v = a · t = 2.5 · 8 = 20 m/s.
- Distance from rest: s = ½ · a · t² = ½ · 2.5 · 64 = 80 m.
Answer: 20 m/s and 80 m.
Question 2, physics (work and energy). A 2 kg ball is dropped from a height of 5 m. Ignoring air resistance and taking g = 9.81 m/s², with what speed does it hit the ground?
- All potential energy becomes kinetic energy: m · g · h = ½ · m · v².
- The mass cancels, so v = √(2 · g · h) = √(2 · 9.81 · 5) = √98.1.
- v ≈ 9.90 m/s.
Answer: about 9.9 m/s. The mass was never needed, and spotting that saves time.
Question 3, chemistry. Methane burns according to CH₄ + 2 O₂ → CO₂ + 2 H₂O. How many grams of CO₂ form when 16 g of methane burns completely? Use M(CH₄) = 16 g/mol and M(CO₂) = 44 g/mol.
- Moles of methane: n = m / M = 16 / 16 = 1 mol.
- The equation gives one CO₂ per CH₄, so 1 mol of CO₂ forms.
- Mass of CO₂: m = n · M = 1 · 44 = 44 g.
Answer: 44 g.
Question 4, sequences and series. A geometric sequence starts 3, 6, 12, ... What is the sum of the first 6 terms?
- First term a = 3, ratio r = 2, number of terms n = 6.
- Sum formula: S = a · (rⁿ − 1) / (r − 1) = 3 · (64 − 1) / 1.
- S = 3 · 63 = 189.
Answer: 189. Check: 3 + 6 + 12 + 24 + 48 + 96 = 189.
Question 5, trigonometry. Solve 2 sin x = 1 for 0 ≤ x < 2π.
- sin x = ½.
- The reference angle is π/6.
- Sine is positive in the first and second quadrants, so x = π/6 or x = π − π/6 = 5π/6.
Answer: x = π/6 or x = 5π/6. Leaving out the second solution is the most common way to lose this mark.
The arithmetic in all five is short. The marks go on reading the question carefully and typing the answer in the form the input box expects, for example an exact value like 5π/6 where a decimal would not be accepted. Try the answer box on the free OMPT practice test before your first full mock, and read our notes on answer input and the on-screen calculator.
How to schedule your OMPT-G against the KU Leuven deadline
KU Leuven publishes its application deadlines on a separate application windows page, and they differ by nationality and diploma. Take your date from there; this guide does not repeat it, because it changes from year to year. What the admission page does fix is the rule: your official OMPT-G result must be available before that deadline.
Count backwards from the deadline:
- Results. Standard grading takes up to 8 business days, about 12 calendar days. The paid fast-grading option cuts this to about 4 business days.
- Booking. You book on omptest.org at least 72 hours before the slot. Short-notice booking exists at an extra fee.
- Retake buffer. If you want one retake in reserve, add about two weeks to repair weak chapters, plus another round of booking and grading. That puts your first attempt roughly five to six weeks before the deadline.
- Preparation. The provider suggests about 120 hours for OMPT-G. At 15 hours a week that is eight weeks; at 10 hours a week it is twelve.
So a student who wants one retake in reserve and studies 15 hours a week should start preparing about three and a half months before the KU Leuven deadline. If your deadline falls in spring 2027, that means starting around the turn of the year at the latest.
Booking steps, the proctoring check and what to have on your desk are in how to book the OMPT and OMPT proctoring rules on exam day. What the certificate shows and how the university receives it is explained in OMPT results and certificates.
A 10-week OMPT-G plan for KU Leuven applicants
This plan fits the provider's 120 hours into ten weeks at about 12 hours a week, which leaves room for school or work. The order is different from a generic plan: it puts the science chapters early, because those are the chapters that SAT and OMPT-D candidates have not practised, and fixing them late is where most rushed preparation fails.
- Week 1: sit a full-length OMPT-G mock cold, 26 questions in 180 minutes. Examify's OMPT-G generation-1 mock matches the real question count and time limit. Score it chapter by chapter, not just in total.
- Week 2: mechanics. Motion with constant acceleration, Newton's second law, work, kinetic and potential energy. Write every formula you use on one sheet and redo each worked example without looking.
- Week 3: chemistry. Substances and moles, balancing reactions, acids and bases, redox. Practise mole calculations until you can do them without a pause.
- Week 4: functions, the largest chapter with 29 topics. Domain and range, polynomials, root and rational functions, and limits.
- Week 5: exponentials and logarithms, plus sequences and series. The series chapter is small (5 topics) but new to most SAT candidates.
- Week 6: trigonometry. Exact values, the unit circle, and equations with more than one solution in an interval.
- Week 7: both geometry chapters. Triangle calculations, polygons, circles and intersections of lines and circles.
- Week 8: linear and quadratic equations and systems. Most applicants know these; use the week to get faster, not to relearn.
- Week 9: a second full-length mock under exam conditions, three blank A4 sheets and pencils only, on-screen calculator only. Fix the two weakest chapters it shows.
- Week 10: a third mock. Book your OMPT-G only if you score 70% or more; otherwise move the date while you still have room before the deadline.
If your week-1 mock is already above 60% and only the science chapters are weak, you need far fewer than 120 hours. Our guide on how long OMPT preparation takes shows how to scale the provider's estimate to your own starting point.
Adapting the plan to your background
Former SAT candidates. Your algebra and linear equations are likely strong, so shorten week 8. Put the saved time into trigonometric equations, circle geometry and the science chapters. Get used to typing exact answers, since there are no answer options to eliminate.
Former OMPT-D candidates. Your functions, trigonometry and geometry are probably ahead of the OMPT-G level. Skip or shorten weeks 4, 6 and 7 after checking your mock, and spend the time on mechanics, chemistry and sequences. Practise the faster pace: 6.9 minutes per question instead of 8.6.
IB Diploma and French Baccalaureate holders outside the EEA. KU Leuven explicitly advises you to take the OMPT-G rather than rely on the July starting test, because of the visa. Book early enough that a retake still fits before your deadline.
A-Level students. Under the 2027-28 text you need at least a B in each of three A-Levels, including maths and one relevant science. The grade C route through the Admissions Committee is no longer written on the page. If you studied physics or chemistry at A-Level, the science chapters will be familiar; if you took biology as your science, give mechanics extra time.
The other admission requirements for KU Leuven Engineering Technology
The OMPT-G is one part of the application. KU Leuven evaluates the whole file, and the page says clearly that meeting the proficiency requirements "is not an immediate guarantee for admission".
Diploma. You need access to higher education in your own country. EB and IB holders are eligible if they meet the English and maths and science requirements. Holders of an EU secondary or university degree must be admissible to an equivalent programme in that country. Holders of a non-EU diploma must be admissible to a bachelor's programme comparable to a Flemish bachelor in the country that issued it. GCE holders need three A-Levels at grade B or higher, including maths and at least one relevant science such as biology, physics or chemistry; the third subject should preferably be another science.
English. Only these tests are accepted:
- TOEFL iBT: 85, with minimum subscores of 20, or on the new TOEFL scale introduced on 21 January 2026: Reading 4, Listening 4.5, Speaking 4, Writing 4
- IELTS Academic: 6.5, with minimum subscores of 6
- Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency: 176, with minimum subscores of 169
You are exempt if you hold a Flemish secondary diploma; a secondary or higher education degree from Australia, English-speaking Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the USA where the whole programme was taught in English; a European Baccalaureate with at least 16 hours a week taught in English (physical education not counted); or an IB Diploma with at least half of the courses taught in English.
STIS. Applicants without a Flemish degree may be invited to an additional online assessment called STIS. It is free, taken remotely within two weeks of the invitation, and not binding. The 2027-28 text adds that not taking part when invited may count against your application.
Introductory course. Every student, Belgians included, must be formally enrolled at the start of the academic year and must attend the introductory course, which starts three weeks before the academic year. Plan your arrival in Belgium around that date, not the first day of lectures.
What stays the same at KU Leuven
The change is limited to the Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Leuven. The other KU Leuven programmes on Examify's list keep their current modules: the Bachelor of Business Administration in Brussels asks OMPT-A at 75%, and the Bachelor of Business Engineering asks OMPT-D at 60%. Both are covered in the KU Leuven OMPT requirements guide, and the programme table with source links is on the KU Leuven university page. Always read the tab for your own intake year on the programme page, because KU Leuven publishes next year's rules next to this year's.
Checklist before you apply to KU Leuven Engineering Technology for 2027-28
- Open the official admission page and select the 2027-2028 tab, not 2026-2027.
- Decide your path: OMPT-G at 60%, or the July starting test if your diploma qualifies and you can travel.
- Look up your application deadline on KU Leuven's application windows page.
- Count back: grading time, the 72-hour booking rule, a retake buffer and about 120 hours of preparation.
- Sit a diagnostic OMPT-G mock and score it by chapter.
- Prepare mechanics and chemistry early, then the maths chapters your mock shows as weak.
- Book the real OMPT-G once your mocks sit at 70% or more.
- Book your English test if you are not exempt.
- If you hold an OMPT-D, SAT or ACT result, ask admissions in writing whether anything other than OMPT-G will be considered. Assume it will not.
- Keep an eye on your inbox for a STIS invitation after you apply.

Sık sorulan sorular
Does KU Leuven Engineering Technology still accept the SAT?
Not from the 2027-28 intake. The 2026-27 admission requirements accepted the SAT with at least 730 on the mathematics section, the ACT with at least 32 on mathematics, or OMPT-D at 60%. The 2027-28 requirements list one test only: a valid OMPT-G result of at least 60%. An SAT or ACT score, however high, is no longer on the list of accepted proofs.
Which OMPT does KU Leuven Engineering Technology require for 2027?
OMPT-G, with a minimum score of 60%. OMPT-G has 26 questions in 180 minutes and covers 11 chapters: nine mathematics chapters plus one on physics (mechanics) and one on chemistry. That is why KU Leuven now calls the requirement 'Mathematics and Science Proficiency' instead of 'Mathematics Proficiency'. At 26 questions, 60% means about 16 correct answers.
Can I use my OMPT-D result for KU Leuven Engineering Technology in 2027-28?
The 2027-28 page does not list OMPT-D. It says applicants must submit a valid OMPT-G result with at least 60%. If you already hold an OMPT-D certificate, email the Faculty of Engineering Technology before you apply and get the answer in writing. Plan on sitting OMPT-G unless admissions tells you otherwise.
Who can skip the OMPT-G at KU Leuven?
Holders of a European Baccalaureate, an IB Diploma, a GCE awarded in an EU country, or a secondary or university degree from a recognised institution in an EU country may be admitted without an OMPT-G score. In that case they must attend the starting test on the Group T Leuven Campus at the beginning of July. The result of that test is not binding, but attendance is mandatory for anyone who has no OMPT-G result.
When do I need my OMPT-G result for KU Leuven?
Before the application deadline. The 2027-28 page says the official result must be available before the deadline and that late submissions are not accepted. OMPT results take up to 8 business days, or about 4 business days with the paid fast-grading option, so the last safe exam date is roughly two calendar weeks before your deadline. Take the deadline itself from KU Leuven's application windows page.
How much does the OMPT-G cost compared with OMPT-D?
One OMPT-G attempt costs €240. OMPT-D costs €270. Each attempt is paid separately, so a retake is another €240. You book on omptest.org at least 72 hours ahead and sit the test online with a live proctor.
What is the STIS test at KU Leuven?
STIS is an additional online assessment that KU Leuven may ask applicants without a Flemish degree to take during the application procedure. It is free, taken remotely within two weeks of the invitation, and the result is not binding. The 2027-28 page adds that not taking part when invited may affect your application negatively, so treat an invitation as compulsory.
